  • Terrific Teen Rooms

Your teen’s room may seem to you like a no-décor zone, but the right furniture and accessories will help you design a room both of you can be happy with.

    by Jennifer Sellers

Picture the typical teen bedroom: piles of clothes, posters of pop stars and heartthrobs, hair products askew on the dresser and experimental décor that’s questionable at best. And underneath all of those mountains of “stuff” is probably a hand-me-down or mismatched furniture set that you hastily put together when your teen outgrew his or her cute theme bedroom of childhood.

While your teen’s bedroom is probably never going to be the crown of your home’s design, it can be a place that you can stand to look at and your teen can enjoy taking care of.

    Don't Start from Scratch

Many "teen" furniture lines are merely grown-up kids' rooms. If you don't want to splurge for a new bedroom set at each phase of your child's development, buy furniture early on that can be customized through the years. Stanley Furniture's Young America "Built to Grow" is one such line. The functional furniture in Built to Grow is designed to take your child from pre-school to high school while still meeting the tastes and demands of any particular stage.

    Keep Teen Needs in Mind

The key to decorating your high-schooler's bedroom is to choose furnishings that cater to teens’ sense of independence and need for social interaction. “Teens have a sense of style and awareness that differentiates them from both adults and children," says Earl Wang, head of product development for Nickelodean by Lea.

According to Wang, the keys to a great teen room are:

    • Sturdiness: You want furniture that can withstand rough treatment and follow the teen into young adulthood.
    • Individuality: “Teens want to feel mature, but they don’t want their rooms decorated the way mom would decorate it,” says Wang. “They want to showcase their own sense of style and self-expression."
    • Socializing: Wang says a room that caters to a teen’s social nature will be a hit. “You want to let them create a space where they can entertain friends,” he says.
    • Techno-Friendly: Teens today, sometimes known as part of the iGeneration, have technology integrated into the fabric of their lives. So make sure they have devices (either built into the furniture or as separate accessories) that allow them to do such things as dock their iPod, charge their smart phone and play video games.

The teen bedroom sets offered by Nickelodeon by Lea, address teen living needs. Rather than the bright, cartoonish appeal of the company’s other youth lines, which features characters like Dora the Explorer and Sponge Bob Square Pants, the teen line is more sophisticated, appealing to teens’ desire for maturity. It also allows teens to create gathering places in their rooms, as well as storage and usage space for technology. The sturdy, adult design of the furniture makes it ready to graduate to a dorm or apartment after the teen leaves home.

    Traditional vs. Trendy

If you buy furniture that's going to last through the years, it's best to stick with more traditional looks as styles can come and go. However, teens are all about the latest fashions, so if you do spring for new furniture for him or her, consider an edgier look, like some of the offerings from Powell Company. From a Parisian theme to a loft style, you're sure to find something your picky teen can make his or her own.

    Accessorize

With all the tech gadgets you've bought your kid, you might not have room in your budget for an entirely new set of furniture. If this is the case, help them freshen up their space by trading out one or two pieces of furniture. A very easy and inexpensive way to transform a teen room is to buy new accessories. From art to lighting to floor coverings, you can find accents that suit your teen's picky, individual style. LumiSource offers lots of really fun accessories that appeal to teens and college students alike. A fuzzy lamp or hand-shaped chair may not be furnishings you'd pick, but teens and their friends (who, let's face it, are always over) will love them.
