Unique color trends for transforming your home in the coming year from Behr Paints.

    by Jennifer Sellers

Each year, Behr Paints offers a range of new colors that reflect the latest style trends. Its 2012 collection is a diverse mix that can give a room the feel of another place or time.

"BEHR Paints' 2012 Color Trend palettes were created to allow consumers to embark on their own color adventure," says Erika Woelfel, director of Color Marketing at BEHR. "Whether you’re looking to imbue a room with a sense of adventure, playfulness or drama, there is a palette in this trend series that will let your imagination run wild."

These new paint offerings represent four distinct styles: Santa Fe Today, Retro Recall, Safari Escape and Tea Party. And each of these themes is comprised of five defining shades.

    Santa Fe Today

Today's Southwestern looks are nothing like those of the 1980s. The focus now is on faded, antiqued finishes; minimal, streamlined furnishings; and authentic, handmade accents. The color palette, however, is filled with the familiar, rich hues of the New Mexico landscape. To create a Santa Fe look in your home, incorporate the following Behr colors:

    Retro Recall

While some styles of the '80s are long gone, the pop vibe of a burgeoning tech scene is a trend that's rolling back around. Bold, vibrant colors will bring back memories of Atari games, Rubik's cubes and hair bands. Plastics, metals and pixilated designs enhance the look. To capture this style that's as trendy as it is nostalgic, try these shades:

    Safari Escape

If you prefer a color scheme that's a bit subtler, this is the category for you. Safari Escape adds a twist to classic earth tones by incorporating dried hues like taupe and khaki. These colors provide the perfect background for stunning African-themed accents in copper, shell, iridescent tile, mirrored surfaces or animal print:

    Tea Party

While many of the 2012 color trends convey a sense of adventure, this one brings out the beauty of domestic pursuits. The Tea Party collection mixes romance with flirtatious whimsy. Decidedly feminine, these shades are perfectly at home with antiques, embroidery and frills. But don't think you have to replicate your grandmother's home. The Tea Party hues are modernized to communicate a fun, light-hearted feel:
