Nine Tips for Artful Wall Groupings

When it comes to personalizing a space, nothing makes more of an impact than art. Once you choose the artwork that speaks to you and enhances your space, hanging it can be overwhelming. The key is to create a display that creates balance, unity and impact.
Think of the walls of your rooms like blank canvases. Creatively mixing artwork can give your room a new life while reflecting your own personal taste. Here are a few tips from Art.com to help make your walls a work of art.
- If you have a collection of similar art pieces, use frames in a variety of shapes, textures and colors. Use mirrors to break up the display and reflect natural light.
- Use odd numbers (3, 5, 7) in a display to create the most pleasing effect. Expand your display outward from a central piece placed at eye level, or slightly above, on the wall.
- Shelves can create a gallery for your artwork and objects. Lean framed (or unframed) art on the shelf, and then add interesting objects (vases, sculptures, vintage items, etc.) that play off the artwork’s colors, shapes and textures.
- Link art to one another by choosing a theme, or group them by color. Even a series of photographs in various sizes looks unified if they’re all in black and white.
- Consider grouping artwork by style (such as abstract) or era (such as vintage). The key is consistency!
- If you mix old and new artwork, use matching frames in a couple of neutral colors to blend them smoothly together.
- Use the spacing between your artwork to your best advantage. Leave more space to let each piece be appreciated on its own; less to make a more dramatic statement and highlight how the pieces are related. In either case, to keep a harmonious look, leave equal space between each piece of art.
- Keep the balance: To offset the heaviness of a larger frame, group several smaller frames together.
- Line up your artwork before hanging to experiment with symmetry and repetition. Try combinations of both and go with what’s most pleasing to you!
