The hottest styles and coolest looks for your family’s busiest space.

    by Trisha McBride Ferguson

When it comes to creating a dream kitchen, substance is as important as style. Today’s well-designed kitchens are as functional as they are fashionable. In no other room of the home is it as important that appliances, materials and furnishings earn their keep. Here’s a look at seven of the top trends in kitchen design identified by experts at the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).

Trend #1: Traditional is the New Contemporary

Traditional continues to be the most popular kitchen design style, with contemporary following closely behind. Interestingly, Shaker style kitchens are seeing a strong resurgence. Shades of white and off-white are the most common kitchen colors, while brown, beige, and bone hues are strong too.

    Trend #2: Cherry on Top

Cherry remains the popular wood choice for kitchen cabinetry, followed closely by maple, while alder is gaining momentum. As for cabinet finishes, medium natural, dark natural, glazed, and white painted cabinetry reign. Other colors of painted cabinetry and light natural finishes are in decline, as are distressed finishes.

    Trend #3: Floored by Tile

Tile (ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone) continue to be popular kitchen flooring options, yet hardwood dominates the kitchen landscape now more than ever. For countertops, granite continues to be the most popular option, with quartz beginning to catch up. Looking to backsplashes: ceramic, porcelain and glass tile are the most commonly found materials.

    Trend #4: Flexible Faucets

Standard kitchen faucets are no longer the standard, losing ground to more convenient models. Pull-out faucets continue to increase their market dominance, while pot filler faucets grow in prevalence. The faucet finishes you’ll see most are brushed nickel, followed by stainless steel, satin nickel, and—surprisingly—polished chrome.

    Trend #5: Revolutionary Refrigeration

Today’s two most popular styles of refrigerators are French door and freezer-bottom, with side-by-side refrigerators continuing to be a popular option. A surprising trend is the dramatic growth of under-counter refrigerator drawers and under-counter wine refrigerators which are becoming the new standard in custom kitchen design.

Trend #6: A Range of Cooking Options

While the tried-and-true range with oven combination continues to serve as the workhorse for cooking, the combination of a cooktop and wall oven is on track to take the lead. Gas maintains its position as the most popular type of cooktop over electric, although induction cooking is making gains due to its energy efficiency.

    Trend #7: Dishwasher Design

Standard dishwashers, with traditional top down doors continue to rule the marketplace. Yet dishwasher drawers are growing in popularity—both for their convenience and their ability to wash small loads of dishes in each drawer, thereby saving water and electricity.
