Color of the Year

Each year, Pantone, known as the world’s leading color authority, selects a trend-setting shade that will influence the fashion and home design industries. Previous colors of the year have included chili pepper (2007), blue iris (2008) and mimosa (2009). Pantone’s 2010 “it” color is turquoise.

The cool color of turquoise is 2010’s hottest shade.

Whether it’s in the warm, peaceful waters of the Caribbean or in the smooth mineral stones of the Southwest, the color of turquoise both surprises and soothes. By combining the calming effects of blue with the invigorating, hopeful quality of green, it’s the perfect shade to lead us through another year of uncertainty. Pantone, the company that defines color models throughout many industries, including home furnishings and design, has made this hue—specifically, PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise—its color of the year for 2010.

    The Color of Tranquility

It’s no accident that the mention of the color turquoise conjures up images of Bahamian beaches and Virgin Island vacations. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, turquoise is inspired by water and sky. “Through years of color word-association studies, we find that turquoise represents an escape to many—taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy,” she says.
