See how furniture designers are translating runway looks for today's homes.

    by Trisha McBride Ferguson

For decades furniture designers have looked to the runway for inspiration. So, it comes as no surprise that what we see in women's fashion eventually makes its way from our closets onto our couches. Many of today's hottest looks in home furnishings mirror the fashions that are on trend at present. Here's a behind-the-scenes preview from the High Point Market illustrating the amazing looks we can expect to see more of in retail stores—both apparel and furniture—this year.

    Birds of a Feather

When it comes to fun patterns and playful motifs, furniture is going to the birds. And you can blame it on designers from Mulberry, Thomasville, Gabby and Tourmaline Home. It's a theme based on flights of fancy, feathered embellishments, and everything aviary. Take a look at the inspiration and the interpretation of this emerging style.

    Old Hollywood Style

In furniture as well as fashion, what's old is new again. The glamour of Old Hollywood is reflected in the colors, shapes and finishes of today's apparel and home furnishings. But why Old Hollywood? Simply because it's common in times of economic stress to see styles move in one of two ways—nostalgic or aspirational. And the Old Hollywood theme offers a bit of both.

To create the glamorous Old Hollywood look, expect design cues such as Art Deco references, gilt surfaces, Jazz Age sizzle, and Great Gatsby-like simplicity.

    In the Fold

Furniture is taking a new twist with this fashion-forward direction. Inspired by the twists and folds of various materials, these furnishings are sleek and contemporary with a focus on line, color and material.
