  • Trend Report: Lighter and Bubbly

A look at the shapes and colors currently on trend in home furnishings.

    by Trisha McBride Ferguson

Trend spotting is easy when you follow the High Point Market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. Twice a year its trade-only event showcases the latest and greatest in furniture, accessories, lighting and rugs. And six to nine months later, we see these new beauties in retail stores.

Here's a look at two recently spotted home furnishings trends: lighter wood tones and bubbly circle patterns.

    The Lighter Side

Move over dark, heavy wood tones—and make room for something lighter. The wood finishes in today's home furnishings have moved from the dark side into the light. According to the High Point Market, we'll be seeing softer finishes in case goods in the near future. Also watch for painted surfaces taking a neutral stance in pale grays and white.

Nothing's more fun than bubbles and now there's a return of the dot in fabrics and accessories. The latest trends go round in circles this year, offering polka dots in flat and 3D forms. From soft upholstery fabrics with circle motifs to raised circle patterns in accessories and furniture silhouettes, it's looking a lot like a big, round world.
