  • Candice Olson Creates a Calming, Monochromatic Bedroom

A stunning makeover that transforms a cold, cavernous bedroom into a restful retreat.

    by Trisha McBride Ferguson

When it comes to creating a dreamy bedroom, no one does it better than Candice Olson. Designer, TV personality and best-selling author, Olson is host of HGTV's Candice Tells All and Divine Design. Her designs combine comfort and style while creating a sense of intimacy.

Here's a 'before' and 'after' look at a bedroom she transformed from a stark, uninviting space to a restful haven.

    Big Dreams

While most of us dream of a big bedroom, it can be a challenge to make an over-sized space feel cozy. Without a cohesive design plan, this room lacked warmth, had no clear focal point, and the furniture just floated in the space.

Olson solved these issues by employing a monochromatic design. She chose varying shades of grays, whites and silver to create a calming visual space. In addition to being functional and organized, the room now has an ethereal quality that promotes rest and relaxation. And everything in the room feels like it belongs.

    The Perfect Palette

The soft, light palette of monochromatic shades Olson selected for this makeover brings a sense of visual and physical comfort to the space. While the shades of colors are subtle, she injected contrast with layers of textures and materials. Unexpected combinations of plush materials, satiny textures and reflective elements are blended to create visual interest—all while staying true to a single color palette.

    Dazzling Details

Not only is this newly designed bedroom a luxurious and enchanting haven, it is more functional and organized as well. Built-in shelving offers both open and hidden storage and room for displaying favorite things. While a television may not come to mind in the picture of the perfect bedroom retreat, this one is worked into the design unobtrusively and balances the presence of the fireplace below. The underlying theme that ties together the various parts of the room is the use of soothing monochromatic tones.
