Today’s sustainable textiles offer color, pattern and style.

    by Nancy Robinson

It wasn’t that long ago when organic meant plain, un-dyed, oatmeal-colored fabrics. Fortunately for eco-conscious home decorators, today’s "green" weavers are raising the bar in the design and coloring of organic, eco-friendly fabrics. The new crop of home textiles proves that sophisticated, sensuous and sustainable are no longer mutually exclusive qualities.

    Gorgeously Green

“Green can be gorgeous,” says Eco Décor’s Bernadette Upton, a North Palm Beach, Fla. designer who uses only eco-friendly fabrics in her interior design work (which is anything but oatmeal-plain). “As a designer, I don’t like the granola image that has been slapped on green design. Green design is a practice, not a style.”

Indeed, it’s hard to identify an eco-friendly fabric just by looking at it. Green fabric resources are following the same pattern, color and overall design trends as the rest of the market. The improvements mean that these special fabrics are now eminently suitable for use on high-end upholstery and window treatments as well as bedding. While top fabric choices for the bedroom are cotton and bamboo—due to their ease of care, softness and high absorbency—it’s not uncommon to find organic wool, silk, linen and even eco-friendly leather in living room upholstery, decorative pillows, throws and/or window treatments.

    Full Color

And for those who thought they would never find happiness living with organic fabrics because of the lack of pattern and color, there’s more good news. Green fabric resources like Mod Green Pod are all about rich colors and patterns. With exuberant designs in hues like cherry, persimmon, raspberry and honey, Mod Green Pod’s swank fabrics elevate the organic choices from hippie to hip.

“The reason we started the company was because everything that was eco-friendly had a sort of beige look to it,” explains Mod Green Pod’s Nancy Mims. “We realized that didn’t need to be the case. We were able to source clean, low-impact inks that were also bright.”

Mod Green Pod has been joined by a growing list of high fashion eco fabric resources, including Q Collection, Sina Pearson, Design Tex, Indika, Valdese Weavers and O Ecotextiles.

“We now realize there are dyes that are absolutely magnificent, and they don’t impart any heavy metals in the manufacturing process,” says Upton of Eco-Décor. “Our options are expanding. We’re at a place now where we can offer gorgeous fabrics that are also environmentally friendly.”
