Furniture Placement Tips

  • Traffic paths need a minimum of 24”.
  • Allow 14”-18” between coffee table and front of the sofa, and 24” for reclining sofas.
  • When creating conversation areas, keep furniture pieces facing each other and within eight feet of each other to allow people to talk comfortably when seated.
  • Don’t forget to include tables next to seating for food and drinks.
  • Angle furniture, when possible, to take the rough edges off of a room.
  • Is there a TV in the room? Allow three times the size of the screen for the distance between the seating and the screen. So a 42” screen TV needs seating at least 126” (10 1/2 feet) away to enjoy a clear picture.
  • Varying heights of furniture and accessories adds more interest. Don’t group all the heavy or tall pieces together in one area.
  • Open bookcases make great room dividers and create an illusion of spaciousness.
  • Use area rugs to define areas in a room and visually pull furniture together.
  • In the dining room, allow at least two feet of space between the back of the chair and the wall.
  • In bedrooms, the sides of the bed should be at least two feet from the wall and three feet from the door that opens into the room. Twin beds need to have at least 18” between them.

Rearranging furniture is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to change the look of a room. And our room planner can help!

    by Cathy Lloyd

Are you ready to add a little spark to the rooms of your home but don’t know where to begin? Try rearranging your furniture. It’s amazing how arranging your furniture differently can completely change the look and feel of the room. The HomeFurnishings.com free Room Planner tool is the perfect place to begin. It makes it easy to explore a wide array of room arrangements over and over again without breaking your back.

    The First Three Steps

    1. Start by analyzing your space, your goals and how the room is used. Is your room a multi-functional family room used by the whole family for reading and working or playing games and entertaining? Or, are you trying to create a relaxing bedroom retreat to escape from your daily stresses?
    2. Next, determine the focal point of your room. The focal point is the dramatic element that draws your eye when you enter the room. Built-in bookshelves, a fireplace, a bed with a headboard or large windows are a few great focal point examples. If your room doesn’t have a focal point, you can create one with art or other special pieces of furniture.
    3. Measure everything in your room. From the size of the room to the windows, doors and your furniture—including the height, width and depth, measure everything. Once your measurements are done, the fun begins! You have the tools to create a whole new room.

    The Room Planner—Step by Step

The Room Planer Tool can be found under our “Plan” tab. Once it’s open, follow the steps below. (Remember: One square on the floor plan is equal to one foot.)

    • Select the shape of your room and enter the room’s dimensions.
    • Drag the structural elements over from the menu and place them to correspond with your room. You can rotate them, duplicate them or change their size and color.
    • Once you have your room built, you are ready to place your furniture in the room by selecting from the drop-down room templates. You can rotate, duplicate and change the size and color of these pieces as well.
    • Click and drag the furniture throughout the room trying different arrangements centered around the room’s focal point. Remember, furniture doesn’t have to line the walls, try moving it to the center of the room while allowing walking paths around the perimeter.
    • When you’re done, you can save your room plan, print it, e-mail it to family and friends, plan another room or roll up your sleeves and start moving your furniture with confidence.

Remember, less is always more. Rooms are more inviting if they are not overfilled with furniture and accessories. If you have a piece of furniture that throws off the room’s balance, is too large or is seldom used, consider moving it to another room or giving it away.
