9 Ways to De-Clutter Your Office Space from Organizational Expert Barbara Reich

    by Jason Schneider

What better time than the New Year to clear the clutter from your office and streamline your everyday life? Organizational expert Barbara Reich of Resourceful Consultants offers these tips to help you keep your resolution to be more organized.

An efficient workday starts with an efficiently organized workspace, Reich says. These simple tips will transform your office into a professional area that inspires focus, determination and hard workhelping you make the most of your daily routines.

    1. Tackle the Tough Task

Do what you dread most first—the rest of the day will run more smoothly without that dreaded task hanging over your head.

    2. Clear Your Desk

Take time to file your papers. Not only will your office look better, it will feel calmer without sheets of paper scattered all over your desk. Process what comes into your office on a daily basis to avoid a backlog.

    3. Fight the Onslaught of Paper

Discard all catalogs, solicitations and advertisements you get in the mail immediately. Personal correspondence, bills and necessary financial documents should all go in an inbox and then be addressed weekly.

    4. Be a Minimalist

Don’t clutter your desk with tons of pictures, knick-knacks or other distractions.

    5. Stick to a Routine

Get in the habit of doing things the same way every time—if you always put your keys in the same pocket of your handbag without fail, you’ll never scramble for them again.

    6. Keep Necessities in Arm’s Reach

Fill a cup holder or horizontal desk organizer with pens, pencils, scissors, ruler and a letter opener. Also have a tape dispenser and stapler within reach. You shouldn’t have to waste time getting out of your chair to reach basic office supplies.

    7. Maximize Vertical Space

Use empty walls for bookshelves and wall units for extra storage.

    8. Eliminate Email Clutter

Don’t save emails as a visual reminder to take action. Too many emails are visually chaotic and can have the opposite effect.

    9. Minimize Stress by Being Prepared

At the end of each workday, make a to-do list for the next day. Knowing what’s ahead of you will let you unwind that evening and start the next morning in an organized way.
